š³ Russell Falls: The Icon of Tassieās Wilderness
When people picture Tasmaniaās natural beauty, Russell Falls is often front and centreāand for good reason. Tucked into the lush rainforest of Mount Field National Park, just over an hourās drive from Hobart, this multi-tiered waterfall is the perfect day trip and an unforgettable introduction to the islandās wild heart.
š„¾ Easy Walk, Big Reward
The walk to Russell Falls is one of the most accessible in Tasmania. The trail begins at the Mount Field visitor centre and meanders gently through towering swamp gums and ancient ferns. Itās pram and wheelchair friendly, making it ideal for all ages and abilities.
After just a 20-minute stroll, youāll reach the fallsāa stunning cascade spilling over three tiers of rock into a fern-lined gully. Mist drifts through the forest canopy, birds call overhead, and the sound of rushing water fills the air. Itās hard to believe you're still within reach of the city.
š Beyond the Falls
If youāre feeling energetic, continue on to Horseshoe Falls (a short walk upstream) or tackle the longer Tall Trees Walk to stand among some of the tallest flowering plants on Earth. Mount Field National Park is also home to alpine scenery, glacial tarns, and seasonal snow in winterāoffering something new every time you visit.
Wildlife is plentiful here too: look out for pademelons, echidnas, and even platypuses in the nearby streams if you visit early or late in the day.
š Life Near Mount Field
The nearby town of Westerway is small but full of charm, and itās part of a broader Derwent Valley community that values slow living, fresh produce, and access to nature.
