🌲 Corinna: Tasmania’s Remote River Escape on the Edge of the Tarkine

If you're searching for solitude, nature, and a break from modern noise, Corinna delivers. Hidden on Tasmania’s wild west coast and nestled on the banks of the Pieman River, this tiny settlement offers a taste of frontier life—with old-growth rainforest, untouched wilderness, and no phone reception.

🛶 Getting There is Half the Adventure

Corinna is accessed via a gravel road from Waratah or Zeehan and includes a short barge crossing over the Pieman River (the last river punt of its kind in Tasmania). The trip alone feels like stepping back in time, and that’s before you even check in at the 19th-century mining cottages that have been restored as part of the Corinna Wilderness Experience.

There’s no mobile service, limited power, and no supermarkets—just a peaceful collection of cabins, eco-camping, and a pub with a woodfire and hearty meals.

🦜 Wild and Untouched Tarkine

Corinna sits on the southern edge of the Tarkine—the largest temperate rainforest in the southern hemisphere. Walks like the Huon Pine Walk, Whyte River Track, and Savage River Loop lead through moss-covered forests filled with ancient trees, fungi, and birdlife. Pademelons and wombats are regular visitors, and platypuses are often seen from the jetty at dusk.

The Pieman River is best explored by kayak, dinghy, or aboard the historic riverboat Arcadia II, a Huon pine vessel that cruises down to the wild west coast beaches at Pieman Heads.

🏡 A Different Way to Live

While very few live in Corinna permanently, the experience offers insight into off-grid living and Tasmania’s remote character. Nearby towns like Waratah, Savage River, and Zeehan are small, but growing in appeal among those looking to live simply, creatively, and quietly—with the rainforest or river as a neighbour.

It’s not a place for city comforts—but for the right person, it’s everything.
